Naked clay and other tawdry tales

It’s finally 2010 here in Frederick, MD so welcome to the New Year! May your year be happy, healthy, and prosperous and may any unpleasantries or setbacks you might have experienced in 2009 be quickly fading into the mists of time...

Since we caught your attention with the suggestive title of this first post of the New Year we’ll jump right in and tell you the story behind it. Seems our good friend Jane Dunsmore will be teaching an adult ceramics class titled ESCAPE TO CLAY at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center in downtown Frederick. Yeah, we know it sounds like a title for yet another low budget Kurt Russell “B” movie (that’s why we spiced it up!) but we know Jane well and know she’s a natural teacher and a wonderful artist who would never leave a piece of clay naked for long!! Jane’s class is scheduled to run from January 15th to March 12th, 2010 so enrollment time is limited. If you want to sign up more information can be found by scrolling down to the ESCAPE TO CLAY listing on this webpage.

If ceramic work isn’t your art of choice take a few minutes and check out the classes being offered by some of our other friends and fellow local artists including Calvin Edward Ramsburg (
Painting Abstracts), Jean Frank (Matting & Framing), Jan McIntyre Lamb (Drawing Studio), and Marshall Dupuie (Digital Photography). Information on classes by these folks and others can also be found on this webpage.

And here we are only a single day into 2010 and it’s already time to mention First Saturday Frederick! There will be a number of interesting exhibits opening on January 2, 2010 including the Frederick County Art Association member show at the
Delaplaine, Weathered Wonders - a photography exhibit by Marc Weinberg opening at the Frederick Art Council’s Cultural Art Center Gallery at 15 N. Market Street, and a member’s show at the Artists’ Gallery on 2nd Street.

A SPECIAL NOTE & A PLEA : 25 downtown stores and restaurants will be giving back to the community by donating a portion of their Saturday evening sales (5-9 PM) to nonprofit organizations. Additionally there will be donation drop boxes for clothing placed throughout the downtown area by the Downtown Frederick Partnership and canned goods and non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the Community Action Agency food bank. Information about the location of drop boxes, participating businesses, and a downloadable First Saturday brochure can be found here . If you were one of the more fortunate ones in 2009 please take a moment to reflect on and appreciate your good fortune and to share with those who may not have been so lucky.

So get out, enjoy the festivities, get to know your neighbors, help brighten someone else’s holidays and have a safe and wonderful 2010!!!
